Pre-slugging, also known as pre-coding or to pre-ID, is the process of imprinting answer sheets with
student and test information that can be read by the scanner as well as by students and teachers.
Without pre-slugging, over 20% of tests are typically invalidated by student errors in bubbling
important ID fields. With pre-slugging, data accuracy approaches 100% and time is saved by
eliminating the timely process of manually bubbling ID fields and fixing misbubbled IDs.
At Apperson, we use high-speed digital printers to pre-slug several million test answer sheets and
surveys each year for schools and districts throughout the US. Pre-slugging can be used when the
customer knows the identity of the person who will be completing the form. We can pre-fill student
IDs, test codes, class IDs, scrambled IDs, names, and more.
We normally complete pre-slugging within 10 working days of receiving your data file.
Class Packs
Apperson invented the “class pack” to make test distribution easier. A class pack is a
packet of test forms sorted for a single class period and teacher. The tests come pre-slugged and
sorted alphabetically by student name. At your request, class packs can also include specialized
instructions, blank forms pre-slugged with a test ID for rosters that have not yet settled, or even a
key for use during scanning. Class Packs come packed in poly bags that can be re-used to return the
tests to the school’s central office or Apperson's Service Bureau for scanning.
